Happy New Year!

Well, we all beat the odds!  The world didn't end on 12-21-12! I knew the Mayans had it wrong. They forgot to carry the one.

I stated before in a previous essay that the reason that 12-21-12 was chosen was because the Mayans just ran out of room on the big round rock!

2012 was a weird year here in the USA. We had a Presidential election that threatened to tear this country apart. There were very strong feelings on both sides of the issues.

I admit that I was one of those who had strong feeling about the way this country should go but apparently other, less intelligent voters, saw things differently than I.

There have been other things in the news besides the election. We had a few mass murders that hit the news. Most notably was the one in Colorado where a mentally deranged person shot it up in a movie theater and another mentally unstable person killed a classroom full of children.

Of course, as a result, the anti-gun idiots are having a field day! When are they going to understand that these killings cannot be blamed on the guns. This is a matter of security and mental health - or rather lack of mental health.

No person has ever been killed by a gun. I said it! I have loaded guns in my home and I'm here to tell you that not one of them in all of my many years has ever jumped from it's shelf and attacked me or my wife. Never!

For a gun to become a weapon, someone has to pick it up and use it with ill intent against another. Someone. Not the gun alone.

If guns are to be blamed for violence, then we'd have to blame forks for obesity and automobiles for drunk driving. The arguments that the anti-gunners use are ridiculous.

Many people cry, "There ought to be a law!".  There are laws - many of them. They are just not enforced until after the fact. Laws don't prevent crimes. Penalties will prevent crimes to a certain extent, but laws in and of themselves do not. Illegal drugs are, well... illegal. So apparently it's impossible to buy and use these drugs. Right? ...  Right?

No one ever says to themselves, I'd better not drive over the limit because it's against the law. They say I won't drive over the limit because if I get caught, I'll have to pay a hefty fine that I can't afford.

Laws are only good as a means to a punishment, not as a prevention. More people should recognize that fact.

Laws only persuade honest people from becoming criminals. In most cases, honest people don't even need laws because they'd act responsibly in any case.

If guns were to be banned by the government as they have been banned in Countries like Great Britain and Australia, and they were all confiscated, criminals would still find a way to arm themselves and prey on the honest folks who allowed their arms to be taken from them. This is not the way to combat the problem of mass shootings.

In Israel, and in Switzerland the populace is armed and their crime rates are some of the lowest in the world.

I mostly try to not editorialize in my blog, but at the close of this past year I realized that there were a few hot topics to talk about so this will be a rare exception to my self-imposed rule. See what I did there?  I'm breaking my own law!

We have a new year before us! We have a chance to make it a better one than the last one. We have a leader that is attempting to lead our country into Socialism and away from the vision that our Founding Fathers held for the future of this country. (If you disagree with my assessment, please tell me why in the comments section below ~ click on 'add comments' or 'no comments').

There is a quote by Henry Ford that I'll post here for your consideration: "Any man who thinks he can be happy and prosperous by letting the Government take care of him; better take a closer look at the American Indian".

  2. You should just throw away your guns, you murderer! How can you say that you are for guns when those poor little children are in their graves all cold and dead! You have no right to write something like this. Those poor little children. Do you even have a heart! You should die right now!

    1. Well, for one thing my guns, those few that I still have, will be with me and my family until long after I am dead.

Nothing you say can ever make me want to give up my God given right to protect myself, my family and my property. It just won't happen.

No sane person ever wants to see children or anyone hurt or killed. Ever. To say that eliminating guns will accomplish this is to delude one's self. The very same day of the Sandy Hook event, a man armed with a knife entered a school in Beijing China and stabbed 22 children. Should we also ban knives?

The point being, that banning an inanimate object is not the answer. We need to increase security in areas of vulnerability, like schools and have tighter controls and methods of dealing with mentally unstable persons.

Speaking of unstable persons... you, my friend, should seek professional help.

    2. Yes, because if we law abiding citizens throw away our guns, these murderers who have no regard for the law will throw theirs away too.

    3. Over twice as many people per year are bludgeoned to death as are killed by rifles. Primary weapon used in bludgeoning is a hammer, followed by a baseball bat.
Every household with either a bat or hammer in it should be registered and taxed.
Ban mining hammers would save twice as many lives as banning rifles.

  3. Some people just transfer their fears and inner feelings to something else, like the gun that they fear. They themselves would probably be the one most likely to use a gun for the wrong purpose, which is why they feel they are bad. If they owned a gun they would have to use it. They would not be able to leave it alone. Like a match, they would eventually have to lite something on fire.

    1. Many people should not have firearms for this very reason. A person of this mentality is not able to have and not use any sort of dangerous item. They lack the self discipline to control their urges and actions.

  4. Let me guess. You search blogs that talk about guns or have any reference to them and you make your comments. Interesting technique - is this a personal crusade - to attack law abiding citizens and somehow blame them for the violence of a deranged person? What happened that day is horrific and no one will ever forget this tragedy.

Now take a breath and think about your arguments for a moment. Do you really believe that if all guns are "thrown away" violence will stop? Moreover, I have had guns for years and in my civilian life I have never used a gun against another person but based on your logic I should not have any since I will eventually use it against someone. Sorry - I am having real trouble connecting the dots on this one.

Have you ever spoken to retired policemen? There are many that never draw their weapon but still had one. Perhaps you should educate yourself on the facts about gun ownership and also crime. You may find that you are basing your argument on pure emotion rather than fact.

    1. Thanks Randy. I'm a former Law Enforcement Officer - 15 years - and only had to draw my sidearm one time where I thought I might have to use it.

  5. To the anonymous emotionally unstable woman in the first reply.

You my dear are equally as guilty as the Connecticut elementary school shooter. Simply by your last statement. "You should die right now. "

You should be committed and mentally evaluated.

  7. I have never owned a gun, and I may never own one.

However, I truly believe that the only reasons guns did the harm they did in those schools is because seriously messed up individuals used them in ways they were never meant to be used. Those poor children and teachers could and would have just as easily been killed by knives, bombs, or anything else that some seriously mentally ill person chooses to use to harm people.

Someone commenting so utterly negatively the way they did on your blog makes me ashamed to be in the group of non-gun owners. That should speak volumes this day and age...and this is also coming from the loving parent of a 4 year old.

I agree with anyone who thinks that person who made those comments is also evil for wishing someone dead. They should be ashamed of themselves. That person is no crusader, they are at best hypocritical and at worst dangerous to society in their own very real way.

  8. I was a snot nose barely 17 year old kid when I took the OATH and grew ito it's responsibilties , the same with protecting myself and loved ones ,no one has responsibilty for protecting me and I sure don't need any bodies permission ,you can change how I go about it a little but you must alter the Constitution to do so .Many people don't have the real concern to to start a Constitutional Convention because it is hard work and you have to be honest to the people , so most just get on the band wagon like they are concerned but the wagon is headed to a marxist state.I mourned over the little children but also wheep for the rape of our constitution
